Official Website of, Thrissur District Police The official website of Thrissur District Police was launched by Sri A K Antony, the then Chief Minister of Kerala, on Aug 26, 2001, and soon developed into one of India’s most popular police websites, with an average of 2000 hits per day. Among the popular sections of the website were a weekly editorial by the District Superintendent of Police, information on various festivals and places of interest for pilgrims, and an inline interaction platform for discussions on topics of relevance. A survey of online visitors revealed that the website was found to be very convenient and effective for NRIs to communicate with senior officials of the District Police. |

“Reach Out to the People”
Programme for Kerala Police, Thrissur District This programme was implemented as a District-wide community outreach programme by senior police officers of Thrissur District Police, which comprised interactive meetings between senior police officials including the DIG (Thrissur Range), SP, Thrissur and various citizens’ groups comprising prominent citizens of the District. “Reach Out to Students”
School-based programme for Kerala Police, Thrissur District This School Visits programme for senior police officers of the District was designed to supplement the community outreach programmes being implemented by the Thrissur Police; specifically targeting the student community, the future citizens of the country. This programme was implemented with the active involvement of school managements, teachers, prominent citizens and police officers of the District. The programme was later extended to include the colleges in Thrissur as well. (Sep 2003 onwards - ongoing) |

“Nammude Police Namukku Vendi”
For Kerala Police, Thrissur District This District-wide outreach programme of the Thrissur Police was carried out with the support and involvement of elected people’s representatives of the District. As part of this programme, special interaction meetings were arranged between senior police officers and local elected people’s representatives from the local self government bodies, such as Block and Gramapanchayaths. In most places, this was the first time in the history of policing in Kerala that local people’s representatives and police officials met to discuss solutions to local issues affecting the public, in a non-confrontational setting. A significant feature of such meetings, usually held at the initiative of the senior police officers in a given area, was the high percentage of attendance by the invitees, indicating a great degree of interest among the people’s representatives in working closely with the police. “From the SP’s Chamber”
Visual media programme for Kerala Police, Thrissur District This project involved a series of educational and informative visual media programmes focusing on the duties, responsibilities and functioning of the police organization. These included daily duties of police personnel, the functioning of police stations, field work as carried out by traffic policemen on the streets, etc; as described by working policemen themselves. Weekly episodes were telecast on cable TV networks throughout the District. All ranks of police officers from the District Superintendent of Police to the police constable were featured in this programme, which was well received by the viewers throughout the District. “Road Buddhu Mandan Sarathi”
Road Safety Awareness Campaigns for School Students Innovative art-based activity-oriented programmes wherein the creative ability of students were directed towards promoted of Road safety within communities. As part of this programme, specially designed brochures and posters involving characters named as “Road Buddhu” (Road Fool) and “Mandan Sarathi” (Stupid Driver) were developed and distributed widely among school students. Subsequently, activities such as art/cartoon competitions, quiz and essay events, etc. were organized to involve the students in a creative campaign to encourage safe use of the public roads. Participation certificates were also distributed among the winners and participants. These events were held in schools in the districts of Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram |

“Aashayavinimayam Samoohavijayam”
A community-interaction programme with elected people’s representatives, Thrissur Range Based on the results and feedback from the District-level community-focused projects implemented in the District of Thrissur, attempts were made to extend this experience to the other nearby Districts as well. In the presence of Sri Ravada Chandrasekhar IPS, the then DIG of Police (Thrissur Range), senior police officers in each District held interactive meetings on a regular basis with elected people’s representatives within each District comprising Thrissur Range, viz. Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram. As a followup to this programme, regular police-people meetings at the police station level, continued to be held involving local elected panchayath members and police personnel, in all three districts. “Rail Alert”
Public Awareness Campaign for Kerala Railway Police The Rail Alert facility of the Kerala Railway Police, established in 2005, has proved to be a great boon for passengers travelling on Indian Railways within Kerala State. In order to spread awareness regarding the existence of the facility, a state-wide passenger safety awareness campaign was planned on behalf of the Kerala Railway Police, involving a multimedia campaign with extensive use of the print and visual media. Events were organized at educational institutions as well as at Railway stations where passengers were given the opportunity of interacting with Kerala Railway Police personnel. This project was launched in January 2006, with the support of the then Railway Superintendent of Police Sri Suresh Rajpurohit IPS, and is being implemented on an ongoing basis. “Swaraksha Sahayakendram”
Helpline for Women and Children Under the leadership of Dr B Sandhya IPS, the DIG of Police (Thrissur Range), a special Police Helpline number for Women and Children was set up in each of the three Districts of Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram. This telephone centre, manned round-the-clock by a team of trained women police personnel, enabled members of the weaker and vulnerable sections of the community to call for and avail of prompt assistance from police personnel at the nearest police station. On a large number of occasions, the facility was found to be beneficial to such needy members of the community, especially at night-time. An awareness campaign with specially developed multimedia materials such as posters, bumper stickers and wallet cards were made use of to publicize the existence of the facility. “Kerala Police Film Festival 2007”
“a Milestone in Policing in India” The Kerala Police Film festival programme, implemented over the period October 2006 – March 2007, made effective use of the visual media to convey a message of ‘community-friendly’ policing. Short films depicting some of the routine police duties were developed, portraying the act of policing in a positive and citizen-empowering light. In these films, police personnel of all ranks, ranging from the police constable right up to the Hon. DGP, Kerala, enacted the roles of the characters in these films, with the Hon. Home Minister of Kerala himself appearing in a guest role, in one of the films! These films were screened to wide acclaim from members of the Legislative Assembly at Thiruvananthapuram, senior police officers, community leaders and other members of the community, at special shows in several districts. The films have also been screened in educational institutions such as schools and colleges. |
